In-Screed Cable Kits for Kennels, Farrowing Pens & Other Livestock Nursery Areas

Especially in colder weather but arguably at any time other than the hottest periods of summer, it is good practice to provide some extra heat in the farrowing pen both during farrowing and for a few days afterwards. If you are about to build a farrowing facility or are upgrading an existing one, the most efficient and effective form of providing such heat is by electric underfloor heating via an in-screed cable system operated through a thermostat. This is almost standard practice in Denmark where pig breeding is arguably most advanced and sow productivity the highest. It is also a very safe form of heating for other livestock buildings.

Such an installation need not be expensive either in initial cost or in running costs as you will only be turning it on for a few days or nights at a time. Further, you don’t need to heat the whole floor just the area the sow lies on and the creep as well. What’s more, underfloor heating is more efficient than other forms of radiation so your setting on the thermostat can be quite low yet the effect on the pigs will still be beneficial.

The length of the cable is shown in column 2. If you space this out in a continuous zigzag as shown below, (note that the cable must never touch or cross over), with the heating cable spaced at 15cm (6”), this will provide a nominal 125W/sq m of heat and the cable will heat an area as shown in column 4. The total wattage of the cable is shown in column 3.

The cable is buried in 50-75mm (2-3”) of sand and cement screed and the cold tail on the end of the heating cable which is 3m in length is wired into the thermostat. The heating cable itself cannot be cut or shortened but the cold tail can or it can be extended using a standard earthed cable. Make sure that any exposed cables are secured within a robust conduit (not included) so that they cannot be chewed or damaged by the pigs or other livestock.

Each kit consists of an analogue thermostat operated via an air sensor, 18W in-screed cable, fixing strip, strong adhesive tape to keep the cable in place pending the screed being laid and a length of flexible conduit – everything you need to complete the job. The major components all come with a Lifetime Guarantee so the system, once installed, should require no maintenance or repairs – ever!

The simple analogue thermostat allows the user to control the temperature and turn off the heating when it is not required. Kits with programmable thermostats are also available. Please contact us for details.

With an underfloor heating system in place, you can reduce the amount of straw provided which makes for a safer environment for the newborn pigs and eliminate the need to operate a UV heating lamp in the creep area.

Whilst this has been developed for pigs, the same kits are also ideal for cattle, horses, dogs etc. They are ideal for boarding kennels, catteries etc. providing economic comfort for the residents.

Before commencing the entire sub-floor should be swept clean and free from any sharp objects. If laying onto foil backed insulation ensure the area is dust free to enable a good fix.

It is good practice to plan your installation using a sketch marking your laying pattern and planning the positions for the floor sensor, the connection box and thermostat.

Attach the Screed-Fix band to the sub-floor or insulation using fixing nails or the Mi-Ti high impact adhesive tape. The Screed-Fix bands should be spread evenly across the floor at intervals of 750mm. A 75mm border should be left around the perimeter of the room. Do not remove the cable from the drum before laying as it will twist an make the installation difficult.

The heating cables (black cables) must not touch each other and should never cross. The heating cable must not be cut or shortened and the joint between the cold tail and the heating cable must not be bent or put under strain.

The floor sensor for the thermostat should be positioned between 2 heating cables approximately 500mm from the wall. The black flexible conduit provided should always be used to install the floor sensor probe. Once laid the heating cable should be covered with a minimum of 50mm sand and cement screed.

Before and after covering the heating cable with the screed, the cable resistance should be checked against the label value. Avoid traffic over the areas until the cable is completely protected. The screed should be allowed to dry completely before turning on the system. Please check screed manufacturers’ instructions.

A fully qualified electrician must now make the final connections to the mains supply and install the thermostat. The thermostat should be installed in the area to be heated. Finally the electrician should check for continuity of the floor sensor and retest the resistance of the cable. A further insulation test should be carried out in accordance with IEE regulations.

The installation should be protected by a 30mA RCD for safe operation.
